About The Empowered Principal Podcast

The Empowered Principal is designed to offer tools and strategies that no other elementary principal resource provides - exercises that strengthen your emotional fitness as an educational leader. Former teacher, principal, district administrator, and Certified Life Coach Angela Kelly Robeck discusses why elementary principals feel complete overwhelm, ways to approach the issue of time, how to build authentic relationships with staff, parents, students, and district officials, and how to enjoy your job and life overall. Together, we tackle the toughest aspects of being a principal by learning how to manage your thinking so that you can handle whatever comes your way. Angela Kelly Robek has been in education her entire life – about half as a student and the other half as an educator. As a student she learned all of the socially acceptable skills that go along with being in school, such as standing in line, taking turns, and raising her hand before she spoke (that one was really hard for her). Robek also learned lessons that were not in the curriculum, things like: tell the truth only when it’s pleasant, good students are the only ones who get praised, and only the teacher makes decisions. She took these lessons to heart and worked to be the best little student she could be. She said the right answers, was sure to please the teacher, and never got sent to the principal’s office. She did not ask questions that would offend or upset others and even when she wanted to speak up as Angela knew it was survival of the nicest. If you wanted to stay in the game and advance your ranking, you had to do whatever the adult in the room said. This method worked well for her through her formative years and into college. She was a strong, obedient student who followed the rules and got the A. It never occurred to her that her skill set honed as a student would not serve her well as an adult.
